Thomas and Donahue had never worked together before. They pondered why some couples stay together and whether they still had things to learn about their own relationship, which they reveal in this conversation. Q: What are some of the common themes about successful marriage that emerged from your interviews?
They faced many different challenges: alcoholism, illnesses, unfaithfulness. Q: In her introduction to the book, Marlo writes about the small, day-to-day ways you two connect. Why are those things important for couples? That will never work.
Shaw, why have you been married so many times? It all came home to me when we interviewed Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos. Spears said Donahue, 85, was full of memories and conversations like this. During the show, Donahue sported a dress, which stirred up quite a controversy at the time. Spears said Donahue went into detail about this night, how it came to be and the controversy that followed it.
They also talked about Donahue's life in politics in the early s. Ultimately, Spears was told, this led to Donahue being fired from MSNBC in despite his show being their top rated show at the time. The political conversations didn't stop there either. Spears said former President Donald Trump and his four years in office was a talking point during the interview. Before the days of "The Art of the Deal," Donahue had the chance to interview Trump on his talk show.
Well, he doesn't say that. But, he was fascinated by him. This connection Trump was able to create with people was a talking point for Spears and Donahue, rather than focusing more on his political views. For Spears, this was an historic interview in his career. Though he said he's been blessed to meet all kinds of different people and have many different conversations, this one felt bigger.
Not only was Spears interviewing someone he has looked up to throughout his career in broadcast, he was doing it in the intimate setting of Donahue's home. And when Donahue complimented Spears and noted that Spears reminds him of himself in his early days of working in media, Spears took it to heart.
Spears, who didn't study journalism or broadcast in college, said this is a signal that perseverance and hard work does pay off; even for people in a small town like Marion.
Similarly to Spears making the drive to New York for the interview, Donahue once made the drive to an airport to track down Ralph Nader to convince him to be on his show. Both Spears and Donahue said a large part of success boils down to persistence.
