The good news is that many areas that enforce a no-street parking law allow you to park the RV on your property. However, the RV must not obstruct the sidewalk or encroach on the property of neighbors. In some cities, parking an RV on a residential street is allowed. However, the owner of the vehicle must obtain an RV parking permit before they are legally permitted to park on the street. Depending on location, RV parking permits vary in cost.

Additionally, many of these permits outline a specific timeframe that the RV is allowed to remain. Other cities, such as Gardena, California, offer long-term parking permits for RV street parking.

The fact is, RV parking laws vary by state, city and even neighborhood. Be sure to check out the laws in your area and in locations that you plan to visit. When it comes to parking at rest stops, not all states have specific regulations regarding overnight parking for RVs. Because a primary goal of rest areas is to encourage safe and alert driving, many states have lenient policies for overnight RV parking.

You can see the range of RV parking regulations in rest areas by examining laws in a handful of states:. Colorado : There is no overnight parking or camping allowed in Colorado's rest areas. Minnesota : All other motorists are permitted to stop at rest areas for up to four hours, where posted.

Utah : All rest areas are posted for no overnight camping. However, extended stays are permitted and are monitored by the on-site staff and the Highway Patrol. Nebraska : Overnight camping or parking is prohibited. Besides, there are now people all living in tents and campers and cars and even bus conversions. You would need an army of police to harass all of them.

So, for the most part, you get left alone. For a day or a night, maybe. But, the local homeowners have become your worst nightmare now. I have to pay thousands and thousands each month and What you have is a situation where you are most likely breaking some local law. But, it's not enforced, unless YOU make yourself a nuisance and force someone to act on your behavior. I think not because of so many homeless people wanting to lose and still out of your neighborhood and do meth and make meth labs in motorhome that you are not safe but having a motorhome beside your house that you don't know who's inside of.

Most parking lots will charge more for oversized vehicles as they require more than 1 space which they normally would get paid separately for. But some charge an hourly rate, no matter what size. Some lots will charge a regular flat-rate during the week but have free parking on weekends.

Others may charge an hourly rate, with different rates for passenger vehicles, vans, and oversized vehicles. If there is an area you want to stay in, and you know which lot you want to park in, you should call ahead first to discuss their rates and whether you can park overnight. Before you park in a retail lot overnight, make sure you ask permission from the store manager. There may be municipal regulations that prohibit overnight parking.

Even if you see other RVs parked there, you should still ask permission. It would be terribly inconvenient to get booted out of the parking lot in the middle of the night.
